EMO
2010 Nims Project

KTLCB is working with Nims Middle school to create two new outdoor school courtyards and a community garden project.

The middle school campus is looking to repurpose the central courtyards at the middle school campus that will add useable outdoor space and become an extension of the classroom.  By teaming up with FAMU School of Design, the courtyards will get a make over that will add new plants and hardscape that will compliment the schools "going to college" theme.

Kay Collins, the Principal at Nims, is the visionary behind the project.  "Children need to be in an environment that gives them a real chance to learn in creative ways."

As a part of the design process, Shawn Kalbli, Adjunct Professor at FAMU School of Architecture, will help to lead a workshop that engages the middle school students and faculty in a effort to allow the design's outcome to best provide for their needs.  Another exciting part of the project is a new community garden that is being planned on an un-used portion of the school campus.  This large field will be planned as a garden that will grow vegetables for sale and donation within the community.  "The students will get an opportunity to get their hands dirty, learn about gardening, while giving back to the community," Kay explained.

This type of community garden at school campuses and within local neighborhoods is a growing trend in communities across the nation.  The design project is set to kick off early January and is expected to be completed in March.  The final plans will be used to make improvements through Leon County School Board funds, donations and volunteer time and efforts.  For more information regarding the project, contact Diana Hanson at KTLCB or David Malcolm at Wood&Partners, Inc (850-391-0360)

Thanks to everyone who helped make the Super Clean Sweep the biggest one yet!  Last year we had about 40 groups – this year we had over 140!

We’re still tabulating numbers but it looks like easily over 20 tons collected!  Just in the Apalachicola National Forest alone we collected 15.26 tons!

Aimann Hafez of Super Lube
was the generous sponsor and hard working volunteer who delivered the drinks (provided by Charles Vickery at Pepsi), helped set up the staging site, and visited clean up sites to photograph volunteers.

KTLCB 2009 Super Clean Sweep PicturesBob Smith of Home Depot
helped set up and was joined by Sara Jacobs of Comcast, Sharon Liggett (and coworker Laurie) of TACVB, Lo Hock, Alaythia Burkins and William Cortez of McDonalds (who provided breakfast sandwiches for all the team leaders), and Mike Phillips of FDLE and his family!

Amy Boyson of Waste Management
photographed site volunteers and Keith Harrison donated a rolloff at Tower Road.KTLCB 2009 Super Clean Sweep Pictures

Ralph Mills with WastePro
collected the County trash sites.

COT
collected the City sites and Leon Iron donated proceeds from the white goods to KTLCB.

Sharon Gray
manned the Apalachicola National Forest cleanup (four sites) with help from Cynthia Brantley at the County and many volunteers from forest ‘user’ groups.  Leon County and Marpan Recycling (Nancy Paul) waived the fees for the collected trash.

Sherwin Williams’ District Management, Barrett Johnson
, donated time, employees, and equipment to help the Leon County Resource Officers remove graffiti along walls on Miccosukee Road with their middle school students.

We also thank our t-shirt sponsors:  Shred It, Super Suds, Mooney Containers, Super Service Centers and the Forest Neighborhood.KTLCB 2009 Super Clean Sweep Pictures

Sgt. Audrey Smith at TPD
arranged for police coverage at the staging area and it was much appreciated!

All in all a huge KTLCB effort thanks to our many faithful board members and supporters.
